Eastside Foodie - Fancy eats comes to Downtown East

Minneapolis is definitely a foodie’s heaven and some area's are up for change.

We have Nicollet Ave, aka. Eat Street, which is roughly 5 blocks of mostly ethnic restaurants and coffee shops. We have restaurants all along Hennepin Ave, about 10 blocks that runs through our downtown of high end bars and restaurants that cater to the corporate world, and we have Lyndale Ave that’s full of all kinds of fare between the 10 block stretch of Franklin Ave and Lake Street.

So needless to say, there’s no shortage of good places to eat, but that doesn’t mean we shy away from trying new places when they open.

A changing area.

The newest addition to Minneapolis’ restaurant family is Eastside, located in a pocket of the city called Downtown East. This pocket of the city is the home of where the new US Bank Stadium is currently being built and where we will host the Super Bowl in 2018.

The area for a long time was mostly commercial buildings and a collection of random parking lots, so it’s exciting to see some more development (some might call it gentrification) coming to the area.

An elegant experience.

Eastside comes to us from the same owners that operate city favorites like Bar la Grassa and Burch Steakhouse. The menu is largely American fare, which is a twist of avant garde elegance. The space itself is something to feast your eyes on (no pun intended). Everything is custom to the restaurant. The floor is tiled with an intricate, specially designed pattern for the space.

The cocktails are custom crafted by Tattersall Distillery (a local distillery in Northeast). The bar has custom made brass figurines that line the entire base of the bar. This is definitely not a place you come wearing jeans and a t-shirt. 

But physical fanciness aside, the food is delectable. The flavors are very unique and perfectly seasoned. I had the baked chicken and it was some of the best chicken I’ve had in a long time. You can tell by looking at their menu that all of the items and pairings were carefully and meticulously chosen.

I watched the head chef prepare a handful of dishes and was just entranced by his focus and attention to detail. Though this isn’t a place that you would (or could afford) to eat at all the time, it’s a place that I would recommend to anyone looking for a more upscale kind of dinner, with a fun but elegant ambiance, and food that tastes so good you don’t mind spending the extra money on.

Since I also recently bought a house near the restaurant, I can’t help but selfishly hope that more restaurants come to the neighborhood. With the Super Bowl two years away, I think we’re going to see an inevitable retail and restaurant boom in the area - so stay tuned!
