The Local Fun Things To Explore In June

There are so many things to explore each month and especially this season. The sun's out and citizens are flooding the city: but where would locals go? Our Amsterdam correspondents picked the best and most fun things to do in June.

Art

Before I Die... is a community art project by artist Candy Chang that started as an experiment in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. She created an outdoor chalkboard and stenciled it with a grid with the sentences, "Before I die I want to…..."

This chalkboard is now also installed at the Sarpahtipark. Anyone walking by can pick up the piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space.

Open Art Route: If ‘a sizzling midsummer art programme’ appeals to you too, mark the 20th and 20st of June in your agenda. A bus with onboard performances will take you along the Open Art Route, featuring the studios of more than 100 international artists with shows and other fun art stuff.

Paint & Beer: An annual graffiti and street art paint jam with homemade brewed beer. It is a great event to see (inter)national artists create an artwork from scratch.

Beer

Oedipus Brewery opening: the official opening of local beer brewery Oedipus. They will launch a new beer every two weeks and the brewery will function as a production facility, taste rooms, atelier and exhibition space. The opening of the brewery is a logical next step for this succesful beer brand. Take part during a festive opening.

Film

Films with a view: Every Tuesday there is an outdoor movie night at the urban hotspot Pllek with a great view over the Ij-river for only 5 EURO. Check out their agenda to find out what's screening.

Food

Taste of Amsterdam: the 'lekkerste' festival of the summer! A 4 day event where they've transformed a park into a culinary spectacle, hosting the best Amsterdam restaurants, top checfs, theaters, workshops, music. Fro both the elderly, the young & restless as the little ones.

Fun

Bankjescollectief ‘Bloody Tourists’: The biggest open-air café where you’ll get to know your neighbours. Throughout the city, citizens invite you to visit their public bench in front of their doors. A great way to connect, laugh, eat and drink with your neighbourhood.

Wet and Wild Water Fight: Remember back in the days, running down the alley with a squirt gun, or waiting around the corner to ambush your friends? Relive your youth nut then on a much larger scale with Amsterdam's biggest water fight.

Green

Open Garden Days: Some of the city's best kept secrets are hidden behind the Canal houses: the private gardens. Between 19th and 21st of June you can visit these quiet green oases and step into a completely different world. You can get tickets here or at the door.

Amsterdam Yard Sale: a neighbourhood market in an upcoming shopping street: Jan Evertsenstraat. 170 market stalls: second hand clothing, vintage/ retro, upcycle, local products delicatessen.
