There are numerous gyms in Amsterdam that have jumped into this trend that started in 2009 to offer the extra option of outdoor trainings. Especially in the weekends you will find more than a few packs of people eagerly burning their calories together at the Vondelpark under guidance of a personal trainer.
My thoughts about why it is so popular in Amsterdam is that outdoor boot camps are a lot cheaper than a subscription to the gym, and oh how the Dutch people embrace the word cheap. The Amsterdam Asics and Nike stores even offer running clinics twice a week free of charge.
On top of the price differences, Dutch people also love outdoor sports such as ice skating, hockey, soccer, and cycling, no matter what the weather circumstances are, outdoor sports is popular amongst all layers of Amsterdam society.
To get a grasp of what such a boot camp training session is really like, I have joined ‘BAMM! Workouts’ for a try out. The two charming personal trainers of ‘BAMM!’ aim to offer fun and especially affordable trainings. Due to the recession many people have left their expensive gyms and have been looking for less costly solutions.
‘BAMM! Workouts’ focuses on utilizing the city’s attributes, such as the street furniture, to the advantage of their workouts. To offer different scenic views and a variety of training sessions, they regularly move their training locations. Who would not want to work that body while gazing over the IJ-river. The sessions has made me feel like an Amsterdam urban sports champ!
