The weed capital of the world

Amsterdam equals cheese, tulips, red-light district and marijuana in the minds of most visitors. We are known as the weed capital of the world. But for how long?

While countries such as the US, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, and Copenhagen are decriminalizing marijuana usage, coffee shops in the south of the Netherlands are issuing weed-passes and are restricted to sell weed to Dutch weed-pass holder only.

The government was discussing to reinforce the weed-pass in Amsterdam as well. It seems Amsterdam will still remain marijuana tourist friendly.

The 5th edition


VOC (the association against cannabis prohibition) celebrated its 5th edition of Holland’s biggest cannabis culture festival this Sunday at Westerpark. VOC pleads for a worldwide righteous effective cannabis policy, and the acknowledgement of the positive results of our cannabis policy in terms of public health, and prevention of illegal trade and street crime.

The hempfest was visited by young, old, families with young kids, punkers with tattoo’s and what not.

People were enjoying their blunt along with a lot of nice food stands, live bands, DJ’s, a large hemp market.

Although the majority of us living here are less interested in the subject and rather help on changing the perceptions of visitors, we have to acknowledge the obvious: What would Amsterdam be without its stoned tourists? We thrive on the bucks they spend in our coffee shops and bond with them while passing that joint: Amsterdam, the weed capital of the world.
